Capital Mitigation
Sarah has conducted mitigation investigation for clients in all stages of capital murder cases, from pre-trial to clemency, in both state and federal court. Sarah works alongside capital defense attorneys and other experts to advocate for capital defendants, and compassionately and diligently investigates issues related to trauma, intellectual disability, serious mental illness, relative culpability, and more. She values building strong relationships with clients, their families and support networks, capital defense teams, and witnesses to deeply understand, contextualize, support, and humanize her clients.
Criminal Defense Investigation
Sarah is a DCJS-licensed private investigator in Virginia. She conducts thorough investigations into criminal complaints, primarily for indigent defendants.
Non-Capital Mitigation and Re-entry
Sarah has also conducted extensive work in non-capital mitigation. Her work provides decision-makers context when considering a reduced sentence, a complex plea deal, or the resentencing of an individual who has an opportunity for release from incarceration. Sarah carefully considers the goals and factors of each case to assist the defense team in contextualizing her clients' background, behaviors, strengths and struggles, and–-in collaboration with her clients and their support network–-prepares re-entry plans for individuals returning from prison.
Defense-Victim Outreach
Sarah is trained as a defense-victim liaison. DVO is based in restorative justice principals and is intended to build bridges and open lines of communication between the victim survivor and/or their family and the defense team.
Consultation
Sarah consults in capital mitigation, defense victim outreach, and decarceration/resentencings. She is also a consultant and trainer for the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers' Capital Case Litigation Initiative.
